Obaaberima

I’m directing a play.  It’s called Obaaberima, written and performed by Tawiah M’carthy, with live music by Kobena Aquaa-Harrison, and it opens at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre on Sept 20th!  That’s soon!   I’m right in the thick of rehearsals, we’re setting lighting levels and making final edits and it’s looking pretty amazing on our fabulous set..this show has been in development for over three years, and we are SO excited for it to be unveiled on the main stage for you to see….

The play uses traditional music, dance and song to tell a pretty untraditional story, one that deals with the negotiation of race, gender and sexual identity between two continents: the experience of growing up as a “girly boy” (“obaaberima”) in Ghana, West Africa,  and then immigrating to Canada.   It’s about rage and beauty and binaries and busting out of the prisons of identity that are imposed upon us – or which we allow ourselves to be put into.

Please come!  Previews begin on Sept 15th, and the show runs until Oct 7th.   More info and tickets at buddiesinbadtimes.com

    Hi Evelyn,
I am a Tanguy friend of your mom, Anne and Laura. I love checking out your work on you tube. This play sounds terrific. I wish it were easier to get up there to Canada! I’d come in a minute!
Thanks for all the brilliant, dazzling, funny, questioning, thoughtful work that you create, do and support.

    Love, Beth
