Obaaberima take Best Production at Dora Awards!
It was a thrilling night at the Dora’s for all of us at Buddies in Bad Times when Tawiah M’Carthy’s Obaaberima took top honours in the last award of the night, winning Best Production! In addition Obaaberima won Outstanding Sound Design / Composition (for Kobena Aquaa Harrison) and Outstanding Lighting Design (Michelle Ramsey). I am so so proud of this show and as director, it’s incredibly gratifying to have the PRODUCTION acknowledged as a whole. This was a profoundly collaborative project, with so many gifted and talented creative and technical contributors who gave so much of themselves to create it.
Thank you Brendan Healy, my incredible friend and colleague, Artistic Director at Buddies, for championing this show, and giving us the time and resources need to fully develop a brand new show from a emerging playwright. If there is anything that I have learned over the last decade as a theatre artist dedicated to the creation of new work, it is that in order to make GOOD work, you need a lot of time, and it must go through a process of multiple stages of development. I learned that first from my work at the Theatre Centre, under the vision of Franco Boni, where we created Breakfast with Brendan and the Aunties, and I am struck by that again now. Obaaberima benefitted from a rigorous development process, and I wish every new show could have these kind of resources. Thank you to the Dora Jury for your acknowledgment of our production. I believe Obaaberima is an important new work and hope it will return to be seen by a wider audience.
