Next week, Elysha Poirier and I are heading to Churchill Manitoba….40 hours by train from Winnipeg on the Muskeg Express.
We are going on a research adventure, to continue the conversation we began last year at SummerWorks: we call it “The Idea of North 2.0“.
Riffing off Glenn Gould’s 1967 radio doc ‘The Idea of North’ – recorded 50 years ago, aboard the same train we’re taking – we’re looking to update / re-examine that conversation about the North in Canada today: about culture and climate change and colonial history and “Arctic Sovereignty”, about our images, identities and experiences of these ideas /polarities, in an effort to create a “longitudinal conversation” between the Canadian North and South in this Age of Melting.
Know anyone in Churchill? Been to Churchill? Any recommendations or connections for us? We are all ears.
Also, I’ll be playing an acoustic gig at the Churchill Legion on Friday June 12th, so if you *happen* to be in Churchill, pop on by! Elysha will do projections and I will be singing some songs.
